The most successful IPL captain in terms of title victories, Rohit Sharma has captained Mumbai Indians (MI) in 8 seasons so far. He has only led MI in 8 completed seasons and but has tasted success in 5 of them. MI saw that spark in him in 2013 and appointed him as the captain even when Rohit wasn’t a regular member of Team India.
Rohit was yet to make it big at the highest level when the MI’s team management decided to hand him the charge. The move paid them dividends and Rohit is now an IPL legend. His performances have also improved manifolds in international cricket and Rohit is now a permanent member of the national side.
Rohit’s association with MI had started way back in IPL 2011. The Sachin Tendulkar-led side was keen to get Rohit’s services and spent a huge amount of Rs 9.2 crore on him. Apart from MI, Punjab Kings and Deccan Chargers (DC), Rohit’s former franchise, were also keen to get his services. But MI made the winning bid and Rohit joined his home team for the sky-rocketing amount.
While a couple of franchises were keen to get The Hitman’s services, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had no interest in buying him. In fact, they had revealed their plan before the IPL 2011 auction.
A couple of days before the auction, a user had asked the franchise to go for Rohit. The Yellow Army simply denied and confirmed that they won’t bid for him. Rohit was in South Africa during the IPL auction and was playing under MS Dhoni on the tour. Dhoni is the captain of CSK. Check out the franchise’s tweet –
Rohit has been part of MI for 11 seasons now and is likely to end his career with them. He is also expected to lead the franchise till the day he plays IPL.
MI’s move to invest in Rohit proved to be a masterstroke and they are now five-time IPL champions. The franchise has a big role in the Indian team’s success as well. The likes of Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Rahul Chahar, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah and Mayank Markande had shone for MI before making their international cricket debuts.
